A special Limited Edition of 9 sets of stools and tables named Campo San Barnaba, as it tells the story of Edoardo Gellner’s love for the sea and for Venice.
Each set consists of 3 stackable stools and 1 table with a removable and reversible top, which can either be completely flat or with a profile for tray use.
Material: Oak wood, retrieved from Venetian briccole
Studio Gellner
The name Campo San Barnaba was chosen to honor the years Edoardo Gellner spent in Venice. He studied architecture at IUAV and lived in a building on the third floor, right in Campo San Barnaba.
Edoardo Gellner was from Abbazia and had a passion for boats. When he was young, he worked to afford a boat, a great passion that led to his selection for the 1936 Berlin Olympics, although he ultimately didn’t participate…
It was only in the late 1950s and early 1960s that these stools came to life, as they were made for the Borca di Cadore colony (the Eni Residential Village commissioned by Enrico Mattei). The three-legged table, instead, was designed by Michele Merlo – who now runs the Gellner studio – and is inspired by a series of tables Edoardo Gellner created in the 1950s when he worked with the carpenters of Cortina. Specifically, it draws from a table with a removable top (covered in parchment) that Gellner displayed at the 1951 Triennale.
More about the designer
Campo San Barnaba
Campo San Barnaba is a place of meeting and rest amid the city’s hustle… crossed daily by Venetians who stop there for a coffee or a chat.
In a building in this square, Edoardo Gellner lived, and his bedroom faced the canal, probably above the “sotto-portego” that also overlooked the facade of the homonymous church, whose circular rose window might have inspired the shape of the stool.
Our set of stools and table is inspired by this square, a place of meeting and rest in the city’s frenzy. Each piece evokes the pleasure of a simple pause, a moment of sharing immersed in the beauty of Venice. Dedicated to those who love the city in its most genuine details, the set is a tribute to Campo San Barnaba, where everyday history and life meet in a unique, timeless balance.
