A small light made from briccola oak that remember in the shape of a champagne cork! This object carries the essence of the Venetian Lagoon with two portions of recycled briccola wood, which rotate against each other to trigger the ignition mechanism and create a warm atmosphere in the quiet of a room at night or on the table of a bistro.

Inside, three small LEDs positioned in a triangle project a soft glow that creates three distinct light beams on the surface below. This unique light effect makes each use a subtle and magical experience.

The lighting mechanism is fully integrated into the wood and powered by a rechargeable battery via USB cable (included).

Matteo Ragni

We asked Matteo to design what we call “Lucciola”, a small portable light intended for people who feel like “children again”, because their nighttime adventures shouldn’t disturb grandma’s peaceful sleep. As a response, we received this charming table lamp, which achieves the same effect while remaining stationary on the nightstand. However, Matteo achieved a second result: a companion light that helps children overcome their fear of the dark.

More about the designer

Santa Marta

The name of this light, made from Venetian briccola oak, refers to the former Campo di Marte, now Santa Marta, which in the early 1900s hosted a gas workshop that fueled the characteristic cast-iron lanterns that illuminated Venice.

Products with Stories

These objects also serve as a bridge between past and future generations, telling a story of Venetian culture, tradition, and excellence.

Circular Economy

Pieces of Venice is a social enterprise with a circular economy model and a short supply chain. We begin with the recovery and recycling of discarded materials from Venice, and through industrial design, we give them new life as souvenirs and practical items.

Alberto Toso Fei narrates...

“In Venice, for several centuries—until public lighting was introduced—the dark alleys naturally frightened people: murders, in ancient times, were not uncommon.
It’s even said that the large number of murders led to the presence of many capitals in Venice: concerned with the frequency of crimes committed along the streets, in 1128 the Serenissima ordered that the streets be lit with ‘cesendeli’, small lanterns (from the Latin word “cicendelae”, fireflies); above them, sacred images were placed to deter thieves and murderers. Parish priests were tasked with their care; the Republic covered the expenses.

In 1450, the government decreed that anyone walking in the city after three in the morning must be provided with a light. This gave rise to the use of servants carrying lamps, especially among the wealthier classes.
This led to the creation of the Codega (a term possibly derived from the Greek odegos, guide), a kind of porter who, with a lit lantern, would wait by cafes or other popular spots to escort those who wished to be accompanied home.

The entire city’s lighting with ferali (lanterns) was decreed in 1732: everyone was obliged to contribute, except for ‘the miserable’. Starting the following century, Venice produced its own gas for street lamps, in a workshop located in Santa Marta”.
