An incense holder crafted from reclaimed Venetian briccola wood shaped like a traditional flat-bottomed boat: the barge.
Its “cabin” can be adjusted in two directions thanks to a small magnet, allowing the incense sticks to be placed in different positions.

Material: Natural briccola oak. The cabin is made with thermally treated briccola oak.

Marco Zito

This is the third boat designed by Marco Zito, following the taxi and vaporetto, and it’s part of a growing collection that will expand over time.
This piece’s name refers to an ancient place, the seventeenth-century spice shop “All’Ercole d’Oro”, located at Cannaregio 2233/A.

More about the designer

Cannaregio 2233/A

This item is dedicated to the 17th-century Spezieria all’Ercole d’Oro, a magical place where upon entering, you will feel as though you’ve stepped back in time, surrounded by majestic walnut furniture and 19th-century vases.
It became famous at the end of the 1600s under the guidance of the renowned botanist Gian Girolamo Zanichelli, who created the recipe for the Santa Fosca pill or “piovano” – purgative herbal pills produced until the 1970s – which became so successful that the Serenissima had prohibited their counterfeiting.
Today, the Spezieria revives the ancient art of the “muschieri” – or “guantai” – who were the first perfumers of Venice, and you will find a line of Venetian perfumes and excellent incense.

Products with Stories

These objects also serve as a bridge between past and future generations, telling a story of Venetian culture, tradition, and excellence.

Circular Economy

Pieces of Venice is a social enterprise with a circular economy model and a short supply chain. We begin with the recovery and recycling of discarded materials from Venice, and through industrial design, we give them new life as souvenirs and practical items.

Alberto Toso Fei

Alberto Toso Fei narrates...

“In Venice, only certain spice shops were authorized to manufacture them: laborers crushed the ingredients in large bronze mortars just outside the shops. During the 18th century, one of these shops, All’Ercole d’Oro in Santa Fosca (which still preserves a stunning historic room), started producing the ‘Piovano’s Pills,’ digestive pastilles that were remarkably popular well into the 20th century. Legend says that when Giuseppe Garibaldi passed away on the island of Caprera, a box of Piovano’s Pills was found in his room”.
