A candle holder made from reclaimed Venice “briccola” wood that can hold a traditional candle, a tealight, or incense.

The name of this object refers to the address of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice, built to thank the Madonna for the liberation from the plague that decimated the population of Venice between 1630 and 1631.

Material: Oak from “briccola” wood

More about the designer

Dorsoduro 1

The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice, to which our wooden candle holder is dedicated, is one of the finest expressions of Venetian baroque architecture and is octagonal to symbolize the number 8, a symbol of salvation and hope.
The shape of the dome symbolically evokes the Virgin’s crown. Each year, on November 21, the feast of Madonna della Salute is celebrated, and Venetians cross a temporary floating bridge fixed on poles connecting San Marco to the basilica.
Throughout the day, a continuous stream of faithful arrives from all over to pray and light a candle, creating a unique, evocative, and solemn atmosphere.

Products with Stories

These objects also serve as a bridge between past and future generations, telling a story of Venetian culture, tradition, and excellence.

Circular Economy

Pieces of Venice is a social enterprise with a circular economy model and a short supply chain. We begin with the recovery and recycling of discarded materials from Venice, and through industrial design, we give them new life as souvenirs and practical items.

Alberto Toso Fei narrates...

“The Venetians imported virgin wax from the Levant, Moldavia, and Wallachia; and became so skilled at working it that sometimes the candles were decorated with actual bas-reliefs of saints, or were made in enormous sizes, like those created for the feast of St. Anthony in 1251, some of which were so large they had to be carried by sixteen men or loaded onto carts pulled by oxen.

Even today, there is at least one occasion when candles play a key role: the feast of Madonna della Salute, on November 21, which was established along with the construction of the great votive church to prevent the great plague of 1630. It is an intimate and unmissable occasion for all Venetians. Even among non-believers, many will go to church on that day to light a candle for the Virgin, asking for the greatest gift: that of health”.
