Pieces of Venice participates at VID 2021
Venice elected as the world capital of sustainability reacts to the post-pandemic by becoming the scene of many events and initiatives with the aim of promoting the development of interventions directed to sustainable growth and the promotion of artistic heritage.
Among them took place on July 17 and 18, ’21 VID2021_Venice Innovation Design. The goal was to accompany the process of transforming the Island of San Servolo into a living laboratory of sustainability through the involvement of public institutions together with private partners.
Venetians still call it “the island of the crazies” because this place was first a Benedictine monastery, then a barracks and then a hospital, coming to be a place of madness and suffering … until, thanks to the Venetian Franco Basaglia, inspirer and promoter of the homonymous law, the asylum was closed.
A wonderful recovery, a historical place that from so much suffering today wants to donate Beauty.

In the 1990s, in fact, a major building renovation was initiated that led this splendid structure, nestled in one of Venice’s largest parks, to become a place of artistic and cultural promotion enlivened by a university complex and a modern conference center.
Today, the island of San Servolo aspires to be a living laboratory of sustainability in which SUSTAINABLE DESIGN and INNOVATION will be central themes as discussed in the 2-day proceedings of VID 2021.
We talk about sustainable design because design is innovation and sustainability comes through innovation.
That is why, in addition to speakers who also opened minds and made people think about themes such as recovery, responsibility, generosity and Beauty, start-ups and entrepreneurial realities that have developed alternative solutions and materials and born from recycling or clean energy sources were also presented.
A better world is not only possible, but it is already within reach. all that is needed is to act synergistically between public and private enterprises, while educating the final consumer about responsibility.
Pieces of Venice together with many companies and professionals in the field of design and architecture with representatives of associations, foundations and startups joined this event that gave two days of exchange and sharing on these issues, but above all strong reflections thanks to the interventions of guests such as: Giulio Cappellini, Alfonso Femia, Massimo Iosa Ghini, Andreas Kipar, Alberto Apostoli, Alberto Cavalli, Alberto Mattiello and Maurizio Sobrero.

The speakers moderated by Pierluigi Masini
Exceptional speakers who emphasized the urgency of uniting us all in a ‘concrete and synergistic action aimed at environmental sustainability, to restore the balance that has been compromised for too long with Mother Nature, to respect the environment and people by feeling a strong responsibility to boldly say NO to easy or convenient solutions that are detrimental to our Planet.

VID also had as a sponsor of the event UNO Contract, a Fellow Traveler because it supports us and shares our same values of environmental sustainability, social inclusion and a great love for the city of Venice.
UNO Contract donated furniture from the UNO Essential line – signed by Ciarmoli and Queda, designed especially for the Venice Pavilion of the Architecture Biennale – including seating and accessories, which furnished the Grecale room and will remain permanently on the island.

With us, UNO Contract wanted to make a gift to all participants honouring them with the TAXI San Pietro di Castello 364 – designed by Marco Zito and made by us out of reclaimed wood from old Venetian briccole – to leave with a memory of these days full of value and commitment along the path of environmental sustainability.

This allowed us to bring our project to everyone’s attention, and thanks to Pierluigi Masini, VID secretary general, and Andrea Berro, Sole Administrator of San Servolo srl, we were able to tell firsthand about our commitment and the values “behind the scenes” of this tribute.

Special guest Marva Griffin, founder of the Milan Satellite Salon and “mother of young designers,” to whom we wanted to donate a special edition of our Vaporetto (with gold leaf roof and fire-engraved dedication). Making this, we celebrated the extraordinary career of this “Golden Woman” who was awarded the 2014 Compasso d’ Oro Career Award.

The surprise was unveiled just before the Redentore fires, which beautifully closed the first of the two days of VID, a unique event that gave us excitement and a lot of positive energy, but above all that helped fuel even more the desire to engage and the clear awareness that a better world is possible, starting here and now, even and especially from the small things of every day.
