”Alongside the rare patches of land, rich in salt and flowering glasswort, the briccole mark—though tucked away and, by their very nature, somewhat secluded—the lagoon landscape: they are the long poles of oak or larch (less frequently acacia or chestnut) meant to signal navigable channels.
Suspended between deep waters and shallow bottoms, they sometimes bear warning signs or are equipped with lamps. Some are special because they feature small treasures of belief and popular faith at their tops: the ‘capitelli’, as the votive shrines are called in Venice. One, in particular—on the waters opposite Sant’Erasmo Island—has a beautiful story, that features a famous Madonna: that one painted in 1897 by the Dalmatian artist Roberto Ferruzzi, who won the Venice Biennale with the painting; a young woman in a blue cloak holding the sleeping Child.”
