Cesare and Diane Benelli’s “Al Covo” restaurant “A gastronomic research laboratory”
This historic restaurant, which has been working to enhance the value and sustain the products of the Venetian Lagoon and its surrounding area since 1987, offers dishes made with the freshest fish, fruit and vegetables with a unique flavour, fresh pasta, as well as jams and desserts that are all made in-house by Diane, the ever-smiling wife of chef and owner Cesare Benelli.
Al Covo, where you can choose to sit indoors in a quiet atmosphere, rather than outside, observing the dynamic flow of venetian life, can boast a wine list featuring around 240 labels from the best national and foreign terroirs, with particular emphasis on natural and biodynamic producers.
Ristorante Al Covo belongs to the Alliance of Chefs and Slow Food and to Venice’s Association of Ristoranti della Buona Accoglienza.
It’s one of Pieces of Venice’s favourite places in the island city due to the excellence of both the food and the friendly atmosphere that envelope you as soon as you walk in the door. Warmth, energy, the pursuit of excellence and professionalism are the winning formula that characterise this splendid restaurant to which we’ve dedicated our CASTELLO 3968 Walking stick, made of oak from Venice’s iconic bricole—nautical structures composed of groups of oak pilings bound together. With its refined and elegant handle, it is not only a unique design object, but also an essential companion on the streets of Venice.
While considering where to go to enjoy some excellent fish accompanied by this support, which we carry around certainly more out of habit than out of necessity, quite naturally the address of the “Il Covo” restaurant came to mind.
Perfect for lunch and dinner we recommend that you make a reservation.
Andrea Lorenzon’s Restaurant “CoVino” “Discovering the hidden Bistro …”
The young restaurateur Andrea Lorenzon is the natural heir of renowned host Mauro from whom he has certainly inherited a fondness and passion for good wine. But, Andrea has established his own identity that is well defined and independent from its origins. His “personal hospitality” involves a search for just the right ingredients, the careful presentation of each dish, and creating poetry for the palate (in a variety of languages!) ….. unique combinations that delight the taste buds!
In this small and welcoming restaurant near the Arsenale, in the midst of a calle that’s often “overlooked”, you can take a seat at one of the 7 tables where you’ll be indulged as you enjoy the cosy environment, close to the chef in the kitchen and the attentive staff! A bit of a tavern, a bit of a bistro, CoVino gives pride of place to high-quality local products and the principles of Slow Food, offering a traditional Venetian and Italian menu, which varies depending on the season and the raw ingredients that they purchase fresh every day.
CoVino is one of POV’s favourite places in Venice. A unique spot of genuine Beauty and Poetry, it can be found in Calle del Pestrin 3829, in the Castello area, the address to which we’ve dedicated our long-handled shoehorn. This gracious object represents a caress, beyond being simply a designer home accessory, to admire as a sculpture, it represents a modern take on tradition, just like what is offered at this magical restaurant!
Perfect for both lunch and dinner we recommend that you make a reservation
Mauro Lorenzon’s Enoiteca “La Mascareta” “The showcase for uncorked free thought…”
If you want to discover the authentic soul of food and wine in Venice, head out to the Enoiteca Mascareta where you’ll meet its host Mauro Lorenzon. You’ll have no trouble recognizing him; just look for a colourful waistcoat, a pair of woollen moccasins featuring two matryoshka dolls or trainers that are, without fail, of 2 different colours (as is sometimes the case with his trousers as well), and to top it all off…a bow tie that could truly be mistaken for a butterfly!
But don’t draw hasty conclusions; behind this eccentric personality you’ll find professionalism, expertise and sensitivity. Indeed, Mauro is always moving forward in his battle against sulphites, pesticides, and the flattening of flavours for a product that’s buono oltre il gusto, which is to say “good above and beyond the taste”! He chooses local raw ingredients and searches for forgotten pieces of the lagoon area’s culinary history. These include popular local specialties like cicheti, meats and cheeses, seasonal hot dishes, crudités, beef, oysters, sea truffles, in addition to both marinated and smoked fish. This is the temple of hospitality, where “bottles are uncorked even for a single glass”, and where you’ll feel enveloped by and involved in an unforgettable evening!
Our Fan, a souvenir of Venice that takes on a whole different role at Mauro Lorenzon’s, bears the name CASTELLO 5183 because it’s at this address, in Calle Lunga Santa Maria Formosa 5183, that you’ll find this famous Venetian osteria, which offers an excellent selection of wines and spirits—especially Gin—of countless variety. It’s precisely because of this section devoted to ‘Botanical gin-ecology’ that you’ll need our fan in order to recover by generating a refreshing breeze!
