25 aprile 2025:

The knights of St. Mark reward the Masegni team

In the glorious history of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, the Order of the Knights of St. Mark represented the highest recognition for those who distinguished themselves for military and civil merits. Established at an uncertain time, but attested with certainty by the 15th century, this knightly order did not confer nobility nor was it hereditary, with rare exceptions. The title was awarded by the Doge or the Senate to deserving citizens, regardless of their social rank, for services rendered to the Republic .

The Knights of St. Mark were recognisable by their insignia: a bifurcated cross enamelled in white and blue with the lion of St. Mark in the centre, the symbol of the city, suspended from their necks by a gold chain. Some patricians also received the ‘Stola d’Oro’, a flowered gold brocade sash, a distinctive sign of their rank.

Although the order died out with the fall of the Republic in 1797, its spirit lives on today through those who passionately dedicate themselves to the preservation of Venice.

On 25 April, the day the city celebrates its patron saint Saint Mark, the Masegni & Nizioleti ONLUS association received an award for its tireless efforts to clean the city of plastic, graffiti, padlocks and other signs of decay.

It was precisely the Order of the Knights of St. Mark that conferred the prestigious award on the extraordinary volunteers of Masegni & Nizioleti ONLUS for their constant commitment to cleaning up the city and lovingly caring for it.

Being at their side at such an emotional and important moment filled us with pride.

There are silent gestures that improve a city, day after day.
On the 25th of April we had the honour of seeing the value of these gestures recognised.

Watch the video of the awarding of Masegni & Nizioleti by the Knights of St. Mark to those who teach us every day what it means to truly love Venice.

Since 2019 Pieces of Venice has been supporting this reality through a part of the proceeds of its sales.
For us, giving new life to authentic materials of the city also means giving value back to those who protect it every day, in a silent and concrete way.

Each ‘piece’ we make is also a small gesture of support towards those who guard Venice. One piece at a time…
